What do you say to someone who is going through hardships and is tired and wants to just check out… permanently? I have had that conversation with a loved one and let me tell you , it is heart wrenching . When he told me that he just wanted to go home and be with his mother and his maternal grandfather I told him we needed him here. That he was loved and cared about. A week later, he packed his bags and left this world leaving us heartbroken, feeling guilty, in so much pain it still is with us today. Why? What could I have said differently that would have changed his outlook so that he did not feel it was his only option? I will never know.
But one thing I do know, mental health issues is an alarming situation that we are facing in this country, and the world. Isolation, addiction, finances spinning out of control, divorce, depression leaves us feeling that we are all alone. That there is no hope that things will ever get better. That this is how it will always be. That we are totally and utterly …. alone.
After years of dealing with my feelings about this wonderful, loving person doing what he did, I have come to a place of forgiveness for him and myself. I will never know why, but I know that God is a loving and merciful God, that He never intended for us to live in such a depraved world without Him. That we need Him desperately and He needs us to rely on Him, everyday, in every single way. I pray for all those who are sad and without hope today and everyday that they find peace. Not in ending their lives, but in living their lives and in seeking professional and spiritual guidance to help them along. We need to know that we are loved and cherished by the One who created the stars and the starfish and everything in this world. We need His son Jesus Christ to help us wipe those tears away and to lean on Him.
Be aware, look around you, is there someone that needs to hear this message? What would you say?
